Contrasts in light and dark are what intrigue me. There is mystery in the soft edges between the lighted
cheek of an apple and the soft dark place as it curves into the shadow. There is surprise in the sudden
flash of sunlight across a heavily wooded forest, and delight in a patch of sun on an icy riverbank. These
mysteries and surprises are what I am trying to catch in my paintings.
My earlier works were drenched with color, glorious vibrant color and I loved it, but I had little
understanding of color harmony or color temperature. In 2001 Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzik moved
into my neighborhood in southern Vermont and I was among a group of 11, now known as The Putney
Painters, who spent Saturdays painting portraits and landscapes together. I consider these 5 years as
my formal art training. I also studied with Clayton Beck and Dennis Sheehan at Village Arts of Putney
where The Putney Painters continue to spend their Saturdays.
I moved to Eldorado in September ‘05 and although I deeply miss my master teachers, I am excited to
practice those lessons I learned with them and hope to continue to develop my own signature style.
