My name is Joseph W. Pecos
I was born on January 1, 1966 in Albuquerque New Mexico. I am half blooded Cochiti Pueblo Native.
I grew up the first part of my childhood in the south valley Albuquerque. When I was 8 years old my
grandmother took me to live with her on the Cochiti Pueblo Reservation. It was like going from one world
to another. My grandmother taught me many things about life and how to respect our elders.
My grandmother is a master bread oven builder. I can remember helping her build three ovens. Her
creations are still in use and are in very good condition some 32 years later.
I believe this is where I found my passion for stone artistry. In 1985 I started doing stonework in Santa
Fe for various landscape companies. One of the prize jobs was working on the Cross Of The Martyrs job.
Stonework such as flagstone floors, mossrock walls, fireplaces and water fountains using a variety of
different stone from around the country. Since 1990 I have worked for myself and have taken my stone
work to other places such as Florida, California, Illinois and have also been featured in two separate
magazine articles.
Two and a half years ago around Christmas time we were short on money for Christmas presents. So I
told my wife Doris that I was going to cut up some left over stones from various jobs and make coasters
for our family members. Needless to say the coasters were a big hit. For the last two years we have been
selling our various products at different markets.
We sell stone tables, benches, fountains and other personal hand crafted gifts. On our tables we feel
very strongly artistically that the bases need to be stone. We also hand paint our native logo on the
bottom of our products. On the table leg is the logo carved. The logo is a native cloud and rain.
It is a very important symbol to the Pueblo people where as we have always been farmers and have
relied on the rainfall for our crops. This is how a person can distinguish our work.
The last thing I would like to stress is that we view the stone as the Creators handywork.
Our motto is CREATOR MADE NATIVE CRAFTED.
